Gordon B. Carmichael
 

Gordon Carmichael is one of the senior business lawyers practicing in southwestern Ontario.  His practice includes all aspects of business law, commercial real estate and estate and succession planning.  His work includes the formation and structuring of business entities, both for domestic and cross-border purposes, mergers and acquisitions, securities law matters, lending and lease transactions, commercial real estate acquisition, finance and leasing, and estate and succession planning for high net worth individuals.

 

Gordon’s recent work includes the reorganization of and succession planning for a major investment banking partnership, advising a commercial leasing/venture capital client on a number of lease/loan credit facilities and venture capital investments, advising a lender on the liquidation of an air cargo company following financial default, advising on two major real estate projects undertaken by Canadian clients in the Bahamas and overseeing work by Bahamian counsel on the projects, advising three foreign auto parts manufacturers in connection with the acquisition of industrial sites in southwestern Ontario and the formation of their entities to carry on business in Canada, the oversight of several commercial litigation matters, representation of the buyer or seller on a number of business acquisitions or divestitures, the creation and implementation of estate plans and inter vivos trusts for a number of high net worth individuals, advising in connection with the fractional ownership of private jet aircraft.  Over the years Gordon has also advised a number of local public companies on securities law matters, including public offerings, stock exchange listings and continuous disclosure related matters.

 

Gordon was the founding partner of the London, Ontario office of McCarthy Tétrault where he practiced from 1989 until that office closed on December 31, 2006.  From 1974 to 1989 Mr. Carmichael was a partner of the London, Ontario firm of Ivey & Dowler and prior to that was an associate and articling student with the firm of Holden, Murdock, Walton, Finlay & Robinson in Toronto.

 

Gordon was called to the bar in 1972 and is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario Law School.  He was for many years the senior instructor in the business law section of the Bar Admission Course.  He is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation and the usual local, provincial and national bar associations.  He is also a member of the London Hunt and Country Club and the Osler Bluff Ski Club.  He and his wife Judy reside in London with their three children, Harry, Priscilla and Andrew.
