Gene was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie before moving to London in 1996 to play goal for the London Knights. After a memorable four-year career with the Knights and several NHL try-outs, Gene joined the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds Men's Hockey Team. During his career at UNB, Gene was named an Academic All-Canadian and received the school's prestigious Garnet Copeland Medal as UNB's top all round athlete for excellence as a student, citizen of the community and athlete.
After graduating with his Bachelor of Laws in 2010, Gene articled at a reputable Sault Ste. Marie law firm in the areas of labour, employment, personal injury, expropriations, residential tenancies, human rights and municipal law. He has appeared for clients on matters in the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice. He joined Cohen Highley's Administrative Law Group in 2011.
Gene has also enjoyed a part-time career as a motivational speaker making presentations for charitable orgnizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society, the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, Special Olympics, Terry Fox Foundation and Princess Margaret Hospital. Some of his corporate audiences have included Telus Mobility, Sun Microsystems, Cadillac Fairview and the Royal Bank of Canada, as well as a number of professional and semi-professional sports teams.
